Department of Bio Medical Sciences

About the Department

Biomedical Sciences are the fundamental building block of medical practice. Without a deep understanding of the internal body structures, their normal and abnormal functions, and all the biochemical reactions occurring in humans, health professionals cannot truly evaluate, diagnose, and treat illnesses. They are very important disciplines that are essential to improve the health of the world’s population. Therefore, there is a huge need to invest in it and scale it up to produce more competitive health professionals.

Biomedical science experts work in healthcare laboratories, diagnosing diseases and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment by analyzing fluids and tissue samples from patients. As one of the broadest areas of modern science, it focuses on the complexity of the human body and underpins much of modern medicine. They provide the 'engine room' of modern medicine

The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Mettu University was First launched in 2013. Starting from the time of its establishment, it has been teaching different disciplines for various departments to realize the vision and goals of our college. At present the department encompasses various disciplines that are given to all undergraduates, post-basic, and post-graduate students. Human anatomy, Human Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pathology are given to undergraduates and post-basic students. Pathology for PG students too. Biomedical students develop individual scientific, experimental, and critical skills. These can contribute to major improvements in human health and the treatment of illness. So the student needs to practice the theoretical parts of different Models, cadavers, lab instruments, and machines

HoD's Message

A Message from the Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences

Dear Colleagues and Esteemed Members of the Mattu University Community,

It is with profound honor and immense gratification that I address you as Tefera Darge Beyene, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Mattu University College of Health Sciences. Foremost, I wish to convey my deepest sense of fulfillment and privilege in serving this esteemed institution in this capacity.

Established in 2006 E.C., the Department of Biomedical Sciences holds the distinction of being among the inaugural departments within the College of Health Sciences at Mattu University. Since its inception, the department has served as a fundamental entity, facilitating the development of specialized disciplines, such as Medical Laboratory Sciences, which have subsequently achieved independent departmental status. Currently, the Department of Biomedical Sciences remains a cornerstone of the College of Health Sciences, providing five essential disciplines as common courses to all seven departments within the college. These disciplines, namely Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Medical Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pathology, are delivered by highly qualified instructors specializing in Clinical Anatomy, Medical Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, and Pathology. Furthermore, the department's instructors are actively engaged in research projects funded by the university and are committed to providing community services aimed at addressing the needs of the local community and the IAB zone at large.

The courses we provide are not merely academic offerings; they are the bedrock of medical education, equipping students with an in-depth understanding of the normal structure and function of the human body, the biochemical processes that sustain life, and the deviations from these norms that underlie disease. These foundational sciences are indispensable in shaping competent and knowledgeable health professionals capable of addressing the complexities of human health.

Looking ahead, the Department of Biomedical Sciences is committed to advancing its mission by exploring the establishment of a Medicine program. This ambitious initiative aims to further elevate the academic standing of our college and contribute to the training of the next generation of medical professionals.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all faculty members, staff, and students for their unwavering dedication and contributions to the success of our department. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence in education, research, and service to our community.

With utmost respect and optimism,

Tefera Darge Beyene

Head, Department of Biomedical Sciences
