About the Department

Ethiopia has a significant amount of water resource potential, with approximately 122BMC surface water and 40BMC groundwater (BMC = Billion Metre Cube). However, the contribution of these resources to the country's socioeconomic development has been minimal. One of the primary reasons is a shortage of trained personnel. As a result, the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering (WRIE) was established in November 2022 to at least mitigate the shortage of skilled professionals and water engineers. The Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering (WRIE) programme is one of the undergraduate degree programmes offered by Mattu University's College of Engineering and Technology. The program's launch coincides with the country's efforts to develop its water resources in a sustainable manner. The significance and necessity of Ethiopia's planned development of its water resources cannot be overstated. The Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering (WRIE) programme at Mattu University began in the second semester of 2014 E.C or 2021/22 G.C with a small number of student’s (16) and staff members (12). However, the department now has a large number of employees who are a mix of professionals and specialists. 

Objective of the Program 

At the undergraduate level, this programme aims to train the manpower needed to realize the country's massive water resource potential. This programme will produce highly qualified Water Resources and Irrigation Engineers who will be actively involved in the planning, design, development, and management of water resources projects

HoD's Message

Well Come to Mattu University Department of Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering, a department established with the mission of community service for its commitment to reaching beyond discipline boundaries in pursuit of innovation and solutions to real-world problems. Our strategy recognizes and builds on that core strength by aligning department staff, processes, and priorities around a shared vision. The department has an undergraduate programme and has proposed opening a postgraduate programme with a specialization master of science in hydrology for around 27 students and 8 staff members who have a great rule to accomplish the mission. Depending on the programmes of water resources and irrigation engineering, the department planned to meet the required number and quality of laboratories in all engineering fields, including manpower. We intend to build on our strong foundation as an excellent engineering department with a distinct identity and a record of accomplishment of success. Our foundation is built on a legacy of innovation and collaboration, as well as our core values. The department's plan will be implemented over the next five years. It reaffirms our commitment to working across disciplines in higher education, government, and industry to make breakthrough discoveries and transformative solutions. Furthermore, training qualified professionals in various disciplines is essential for the overall development of the country so that problems related to water resources potential, critical shortage of serious water-related disease in the country can be easily solved. As a result, the development of water resources must be a central component of the country's strategy to improve people's quality of life. The program's popularity is expected to grow in the future. More students will be attracted to the programme as they learn about the importance of Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering in solving real-world problems in the country. The country has a high demand for water resources engineers. For example, the two ministers of Water, Irrigation, and Energy and Irrigation and Lowland Area Development, with effective regional involvement and due participation of various stakeholders. Furthermore, qualified water resources engineers can find work in other public and private sectors, as well as non-governmental organizations. As a result, because the programme was designed to meet the required number and quality of human resources, our roles and efforts are critical to the success of specific missions. Lastly, I would like to remind you that anything is possible if we work together with integrity, honesty, and fairness. Let qualified professionals and engineers solve water resource problems. The Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering programme aspires to produce qualified and internationally competent professionals in the development and management of water resources. 


The Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering Program's missions are as follows: 

  • Producing competent and innovative engineers in the water sector by providing quality education and training services. 
  • Conducting demand-driven and problem-solving studies in the field of Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering (WRIE). 
  • Providing community and consulting services in order to contribute to the country's development efforts by developing its water resource.
