About the Department
The Department of Agricultural Economics is the oldest departments in the Ethiopian Higher Education. It was among the pioneer sections at Haramaya University, the then Alemaya University, commenced in 1960 to produce qualified BSc graduates in Agricultural Economics. Currently, the program is being run by various higher learning institutions at different levels of qualifications.
Mattu University is one of the higher institutions that launched this program in Bedele College of Agriculture and Forestry right now Bedele Campus in 2015G.C. The department was established with three academic staff and 54 undergraduate students in one program (B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Economics) and undertaking different problem-solving research and community service projects.
Currently, it has two programs, one undergraduate and post-graduate program (M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics); 12 academic staffs and more than 77 undergraduate students. Still now 512 students are enrolled in the department of which 408 students have been graduated in five batches.

Our department applied training and research has a strong focus on economic efficiency, agribusiness management, poverty reduction, food security, agricultural policy, rural development, technology transfer, natural resource economics, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and impact evaluation.
