Mattu University hosted the 8th National Research Conference, with the theme "Societal Transformation Through Cutting Edge and Innovative Research," which was a significant event that brought together researchers, academics, and thought leaders to discuss the role of research in driving societal change. Dr. Bedilu Teka, Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Services at Mattu University set the tone in his opening speech by emphasizing the critical role of research in addressing societal challenges. He highlighted that “societal transformation is driven by economic development, social movements, technological innovations, and policy changes, all of which aim to improve quality of life, promote equity, and build resilience.” 

Dr. Bedilu underscored the importance of this historical moment, where the intersection of research and societal needs is more crucial than ever. He called for a responsible and purposeful approach to research, stressing that findings should not only advance knowledge; but also act as catalysts for positive societal change. His remarks resonated with the conference's theme, which focused on the profound impact of innovative research on society. 

The conference featured keynote speeches from prominent researchers, including Dr. Berhanu Belay, a researcher at ICARDA, and Prof. Sultan Suleman from Jimma University. Both shared their experiences and insights, contributing to the rich discourse on the transformative power of research.

A total of 35 selected research findings were presented by researchers from various higher education institutions and research centers. These presentations likely covered a wide range of topics aligned with the conference's theme, showcasing how cutting-edge and innovative research can address pressing societal issues and drive meaningful transformation. Overall, the conference served as a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and inspiration, reinforcing the importance of research in shaping a better future for society.

In an inspiring event aimed at empowering the youth and fostering a culture of innovation, renowned entrepreneur and businessperson Mr. Addis Alemayehu delivered a motivational speech to the Mattu University community. The event, held on 25th, January 2025 encouraged students to focus on their education while exploring entrepreneurial opportunities to shape their futures.  

During his speech, Mr. Alemayehu emphasized the importance of resilience in today’s rapidly changing world. He shared insights on emerging business ideas and highlighted the potential of young minds to drive economic growth and innovation. "The future belongs to those who are willing to think differently and take risks. As students, you have the power to transform your education into tangible solutions that benefit society," he said.  

Mr. Alemayehu also urged students to balance their academic pursuits with entrepreneurial thinking. He stressed that education provides the foundation for success, but entrepreneurship offers the tools to turn ideas into reality. "Concentrate on your studies, but don’t be afraid to dream big and explore new opportunities. The world needs your creativity and determination," he added.

Mattu University recently hosted a successful validation workshop focused on "Enhanced Service-Learning Initiatives for Multimedia Application and Management in Education," as part of the EU-funded COPAFEU project. Held on January 2, 2025, the event brought together educators, researchers, and stakeholders to refine strategies for integrating multimedia technologies into educational practices.

The COPAFEU project aims to enhance educational frameworks and promote innovative teaching methods. During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions to validate and improve proposed strategies, emphasizing the transformative potential of multimedia in fostering student engagement and community service.

Assistant Professor John Tesfaye, Vice President for Administrative and Development of the University, underscored the project's significance in aligning local educational practices with global standards. Experts presented findings and facilitated collaborative sessions, leading to valuable feedback on the integration of multimedia in education.

Dr. Bedilu Teka, Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer and Community Service at Mattu University, highlighted the importance of the COPAFEU project by stating, "This initiative is not just about enhancing educational frameworks; it's about creating a transformative impact through multimedia applications that engage students and foster community-oriented learning." This transformative initiative leverages the university's resources—including land, skilled manpower, and a favorable climate—to serve as a model for local farmers while generating income to support institutional autonomy.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Alemeu Disasa, President of Mattu University, emphasized the significant, untapped potential of these resources to drive both community advancement and institutional growth. He also pledged to foster impactful collaborations with national and international partners to maximize the project's success.

The session featured nine project proposals, carefully reviewed by university officials and agricultural researchers. A recent training session focused on internationalization was held at Mattu University, organized by the Research Internationalization and Partnership Directorate. The event brought together higher and middle-level officials, all PhD-holding staff, deans, and other key personnel from the university.

In his opening address, Dr. Alemu Disasa, President of Mattu University, emphasized that internationalization is more than a passing trend; it is a crucial strategy for higher education institutions (HEIs) seeking to improve their teaching, research, and community engagement. He highlighted that in today's interconnected world, collaborating with international partners enriches the academic environment, broadens perspectives, and enhances the quality of education offered.

The training featured esteemed trainers, Professor Olu Emmanuel Femi and Assistant Professor Addisalem Taye from Jimma University. They covered several critical topics, including: Concepts and Strategies of Internationalization, Joint Programs, The Role of Alumni in Internationalization, Program Accreditation, Grant Proposal Writing, Research Project Management. 

In his closing remarks, Dr. Bedilu Teka, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Mattu University, expressed gratitude to the trainers and organizers. He noted that the training provided valuable insights into the university's current state of internationalization. Dr. Bedilu stated that this enlightening experience has equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills to embark on their internationalization journey. MoU Signed between MaU & PHE-EC

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was recently signed between Mattu University (MaU) and the Population Health and Environment Ethiopia Consortium (PHE-EC) to foster a comprehensive institutional collaboration. The agreement aims to enhance research initiatives, capacity building through training, monitoring and evaluation, proposal development, and the organization of workshops and seminars. The signing ceremony was attended by key representatives from both organizations, including Dr. Bedilu Teka, Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service at MaU, and Mr. Chaluma Kicha, Field Coordinator at PHE-EC.
In his speech, Dr. Bedilu Teka emphasized the significance of the MoU in promoting sustainable development and addressing the interconnected challenges of health, environment, and population dynamics. He stated, “This collaboration will not only enhance our research capabilities but also empower our students and faculty to engage in meaningful projects that contribute to community well-being and environmental sustainability.”
Mr. Chaluma Kicha echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of integrating health and environmental considerations into development programs. Mattu University has graduated 1 thousand 44 students who have been trained in various educational programs in first and second degree in a colorful ceremony attended by members of board member of the university and other invited guests. Mattu University graduated 1,044 students for the 11th round in a grand ceremony. Dr. Dima Nogo, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs of the House of Peoples Representatives of Ethiopia and the Board member of Mattu University, who attended the graduation program, conveyed his message to the graduates to focus on generating knowledge for the development of the people and the country with the skills they got. 

Interim President of Mattu University, Dr. Alemu Disasa, on his part, said that education is not only about completing studies in certain fields and graduating, but also about being able to use lifelong experience and learning for the country and the people. Therefore, graduates should always educate themselves and serve their communities, and they should adopt the knowledge and ethics that will enable them to ensure the public benefit and the development of the country. He also called on the graduates to strive to make themselves and their country successful by working hard and with determination to overcome the challenges they face in their journey. According to this, excellent results were obtained in the candidate graduate exit test given in two rounds of the year. It also helps prospective graduates to increase their competitiveness in the world of work.

In terms of research, our university has worked to identify the challenges and good practices in our society, especially to change the lives of farmers, to improve agricultural production supported by research and knowledge, and to help farmers get agricultural resources. In addition, works have been done on the care and protection of natural resources. Also, promising research works have been done in the fields of health, education, good governance and technology. It was also a year in which various medium and long-term research projects were launched as a special case. We believe that when the results of these researches are completed, they will solve the problems of our society.

Mattu University, also working in community service in education, health, agriculture, technology, law, natural resources and others, said that the university will continue to ensure the benefit of our society. Dr. Alemu also urged the graduating students to do significant work by abhorring corruption, which is the cancer of our country's development.

The graduation ceremony at Mattu University saw students from seven colleges and three schools being awarded trophies and medals by the guests of honor for their outstanding academic achievements. The graduating class included a total of 1,044 students, comprising: 731 male and 263 female students in undergraduate and 37 male 13 female students with a second degree.

The event commenced with a powerful invocation of Abbaa Gadaas and Hadha Siinqee, setting a tone of cultural reverence and respect.

Dr. Getachew Bekele, Director for Directorate of Research, Publication, Ethics & Dissemination, welcomed distinguished guests, keynote speakers, paper presenters, and participants. His Excellency, Assist. Prof. John Tesfaye, Vice President for Administrative & Development and Delegate of the President, officially opened the conference. In his opening remarks, he expressed gratitude to all attendees, highlighted the conference's significance in addressing pressing global challenges, and encouraged active participation in discussions and deliberations.

The conference featured two insightful keynote speeches. Dr. Serawit Handiso, Head of the Research Extension Desk and CEO for RCE at the Ministry of Education, emphasized the critical role of technology in every aspect of human life. Aklilu Alemu followed with a compelling presentation on "Emerging Technology for Biomedical & Clinical Research."

Following the keynote addresses, the conference spotlighted two leading papers. Dr. Efrem Negash presented his research on "Effect of Okra-based Nutrition Education on Hemoglobin Concentration and Nutritional Status of Pregnant Women in Okra-producing Areas of Western Ethiopia." Dr. Kenea Lemi presented his work titled "Qaacceessa Hanqinoota Qeeqa Qubee Laatiinii fi Wayyooma Qubee Afaan Oromoo."

In addition to the leading papers, the conference featured over 40 papers presented in parallel sessions. These sessions fostered dynamic discussions and knowledge exchange among participants. The event concluded with a summary of the sessions and closing remarks by His Excellency Assist. Prof. John Tesfaye. He stressed the importance of translating research into actionable steps to achieve holistic and sustainable development, leveraging the power of emerging technologies.

The 7th National Research Conference of Mattu University was hailed as a resounding success. It fostered a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and commitment to a sustainable future. The event concluded with a certificate program recognizing the invaluable contributions of participants and celebrating the collective achievements of the Mattu University research community.

A Technical Review of Two Newly Designed Soft wares

Two newly developed soft wares by Mattu University's instructor and ICT Directorate are technically reviewed by today. The first software is "Learning Management Systems (LMS) or E-Learning Systems which is expected to serve as central hubs for course content delivery, communication facilitation between instructors and students, and academic resource management. It is said that this LMS is a free and open-source platform which is customizable solutions for the university enhancing online learning experiences through interactive activities, multimedia content, live training, quizzes, discussion forums, exams, certificates, and more. The second software is named "Timetable Management Software Systems" which automates and optimizes scheduling processes of the university. As to the developer, this software eliminates manual timetable planning, enhancing efficiency for administrators, teachers, and students. It enables easy input of course schedules, teacher availability, room assignments, and more.

Both software systems have been presented to relevant stakeholders, and comments and suggestions have been forwarded for their betterment before their presentation to the university's managing council for approval.

The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the university's mission to address societal challenges and contribute positively to the community.

ceremony attended by local leaders and residents, including Bacho district administrator
Mr. Mohammad Hassan, the university showcased its dedication to research and
community service. Acting President of Mattu University Dr. Badilu Teka,
representing the university, emphasized the institution's commitment to
producing high-quality graduates who contribute meaningfully to society. He
underscored the university's belief in addressing educational challenges from
the grassroots level, exemplified by the investment in the kindergarten.

Former university president Dr. Endegena Abebe congratulated the residents of Bacho
and urged them to cherish and responsibly utilize this valuable educational
asset. Officials from the Head of Ilu Aba Bor Zone Administration Office Ato
Biresa Geleta and Head of Ilu Aba Bor Zone Educational Office Ato. Melaku
Amente expressed gratitude to Mattu University
for its contribution to the community. They emphasized the importance of
utilizing the kindergarten effectively to provide early childhood education and
coordinate efforts to establish feeding programs for students.

Named after the
renowned artist Hachalu Hundesa, the kindergarten boasts four standard
classrooms, a principal's office, a teachers' staff, a student canteen, modern
restroom facilities, a fenced perimeter, waste disposal systems, electricity, reserve
water tank, and ample outdoor space for recreational activities. This comprehensive
infrastructure reflects Mattu University's commitment to providing a conducive
learning environment for young learners in Bacho district. The university
allocated more than 12 million birr to build this kindergarten.

Mattu University Inaugurates 3-Block Poultry Building Project

Mattu University recently inaugurated a 3-block building project for poultry farming purposes, aimed at supporting community members who left their land for the university's establishment. The project includes a 3-block building with a fence, water, electricity, and other facilities. As a starting point, 300 chickens with their food for 5 months were bought and given to ten organized youths.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Bedilu Teka, the Acting President of the University, thanked the community around the university for their unreserved support since its establishment. He emphasized the university's dedication to serving the community and its commitment to realizing its three missions: teaching, research, and community service.

Mr. Endalkchew Teferi, the Administrator of Ilu Aba Bor Zone and a member of the executive board of Mattu University, on his part commended the university's efforts in supporting development initiatives. He stressed the need for the beneficiaries to maximize their efforts and achieve success promptly.

Mr. Rashid Aba Macha, the director of the South West Oromia branch of the Oromia Regional State’s Development Displaced Community Affairs Agency, expressed gratitude to the university for its support in improving the lives of citizens affected by the university's construction.

The 3-block building project is a significant step towards supporting the community and fulfilling the university's commitment to serving the community. The project will provide essential resources for poultry farming, enabling the youths to start their businesses and contribute to the local economy.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by esteemed dignitaries, university officials, and community members, who celebrated the university's commitment to community service and development. The project is expected to make a significant impact on the lives of the ten organized youths and the community at large.

In partnership with the Hanken School of Economics, this endeavor aims to foster sustainable development through co-produced knowledge and case-based pedagogy.

Named COPAFEU, which stands for "Co-producing Knowledge on Sustainable Development through Case-based Pedagogy between African and European Higher Education Institutes," the project brings together universities from northern regions like Finland and Greece, and southern regions including Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria, and South Africa.

His Excellency Endalkachew Teferi, Administrator of Ilu Aba Bor Zone and a member of Mattu University board, lauded the initiative during his address. He stressed that the daycare center plays a crucial role in enabling the university community to concentrate on their professional activities, ultimately delivering superior services. Mr. Endalkachew also outlined Mattu University's broader commitment to community service, encompassing various sectors such as capacity building, technological advancements in schools, support for health services, and agricultural development.

Dr. Endegena Abbe, former President of Mattu University, expressed gratitude to the university's leadership team for the swift completion of the daycare center. The efficient execution of this project within a short timeframe stands as a testament to the university's dedication to its staff's well-being.

Engineer Daniel Gedefa, Director for the Construction Directorate, shed light on the financial aspect of the project, stating that the daycare center was constructed with a budget of 12 million birr allocated by the university. He highlighted the facility's various rooms designed to provide diverse services for the children, complete with cutting-edge technological equipment.

The inauguration ceremony saw the participation of deans, directors, and all stakeholders involved in the project, showcasing the collective effort invested in bringing this crucial facility to fruition. In an important meeting led by Acting President Dr. Bedilu Teka, Mattu University outlined its vision for working closely with Professor Adrian Wood in the conservation and management of natural resources. Professor Wood, an experienced researcher in Geographical Sciences with a deep commitment to African development and environmental studies, including the southwestern part of Ethiopia, actively participated in the discussions.

 Professor Wood shared insights from his extensive four-decade research background, particularly focusing on Wetland conservation and sustainable Forestry management, especially in Ilubabor, Ethiopia. The goal is to form partnerships between Mattu University and various NGOs to advance research in these crucial areas.

 Dr. Bedilu shed light on Mattu University's strategic location within a natural resources hotspot. The university aims to excel in modern agriculture and sustainable natural resource management. He emphasized the institution's young, dynamic, and energetic researchers, ready for collaboration with both national and international NGOs.

 Assistant Professor John Marks reiterated the university's commitment, assuring attendees of readiness to support scientific studies in natural resource management.

 The meeting focused on discussions between Professor Wood and experts from the School of Agriculture and Natural Resource Management at Mattu University. The topics included potential collaborations, avenues for securing research grants, and partnerships with different international NGOs and the University of Huddersfield, UK.

 Expressing gratitude for the vibrant exchange of ideas, Professor Adrian Wood committed to leveraging his expertise to facilitate future collaborations with NGOs within the university.  In a significant step towards fostering collaboration in the fields of traditional medicine, research and trainings, Mattu University and the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU, signed during a ceremony held at Mattu University main campus, solidifies the commitment of both institutions to mutually benefit from each other’s expertise and resources.
 Mattu University, renowned for its excellence in academic programs, and AHRI, a leading research institution specializing in infectious diseases, have recognized the potential for synergy between their respective domains. This collaboration aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, research, and technology, ultimately contributing to advancements in traditional medicine and education.
 The MoU outlines a framework for joint research projects, encouraging interdisciplinary studies that leverage the strengths of both institutions. This collaboration will extend to areas such as epidemiology, immunology, and infectious diseases focusing on traditional medicines.
 As to the MoU Mattu University and AHRI will engage in researching, utilizing and advancing traditional medicines our community were using for ages. This initiative aims to broaden the academic horizons of students and expose them to cutting-edge research.
 The partnership will also focus on enhancing the professional development of faculty members through collaborative research, seminars, public lectures and workshops. This will promote a culture of continuous learning and knowledge exchange.
 Both institutions will explore opportunities for sharing research facilities, laboratories, and other infrastructure. This strategic collaboration will optimize the utilization of resources and contribute to a more sustainable and efficient research environment.

በዚህ የሲቄ ኮፒ ቤት የመክፈቻና የርክክብ ፕሮግራም ላይ የተገኙት የአስተዳደር እና ተማሪዎች ጉዳይ ም/ፕሬዘዳንት ዶ/ር ተካልኝ ቀጄላ የሴንቄ ሴቶች ማህበርን በማመስገን ለወደፊቱም ሴት ተማሪዎች በኢኮናሚያዊና ማህበራዊ ችግሮች ምክንያት ከትምህርታቸው እንዳይስተጓጎል ከመሰል ግበረ ሰናይ ድርጅቶች ጋር በትኩረት አብረን እንሠራለን ብለዋል።

በመጨረሻም የዩኒቨርሲቲው HIV AIDS መከላከያ ና መቆጣጠሪያ ጽ/ቤት ዳይሬክተር መ/ት ትዕግስት ተክሉ በንግግራቸው ይህ መልካም ጅማሮ መሆኑን ጠቅሠው ለወደፊት ከዚህ የበለጠ ለመስራት ማቀዳቸውን እና አንድም ሴት ተማሪ በኢኮኖሚ ችግር ምክኒያት ከት/ት ገበታዋ እንዳትቀር ጠንክረው እየሰሩ መሆኑን ጠቅሰዋል።

በፕሮግራሙ ላይ የተገኙት የዩኒቨርሲቲው የተማሪ ተወካዮች ይህ የኢኮኖሚ ድጋፍ ለሚሹ ተማሪዎችን ለማገዝ የተቋቋው ኮፒ ቤት ለግቢው ተማሪዎች በተመጣጣኝ ዋጋ ከሚሰጠው አገልግሎት ባሻገር ድጋፍ የሚሹ ሴት ተማሪዎችም በገቢ የሚደገፍ በመሆኑ የሚበረታታ እና የሚደገፍ ነው በማለት ሀሳባቸውን ሰጥተዋል።
