Staff Capacity Building Directorate

Introduction

Mettu University is one of the 3rd Generation Universities in Ethiopia. As it was recently established institution, there are many skill gaps related with the capacity of workers and leaders in the campus. To bridge this skill gaps, staff capacity building directorate was established in 2010 E.C. Therefore, in line with its mission and vision, the staff capacity building directorate is designing its plan and bridging the skill gaps in both academic and Administrative staffs. In doing so, the needs are requested by Mettu University different offices, and then capacity building office conducts training, makes experiences to be shared and follows another mode of capacity building methods.

Mission

Enhancing quality services transparency and accountability of Mettu University staff through specialized training, experience sharing and consultancy.

                      

Vision

To be the center of excellence by offering quality of staff capacity building and to become the top ten competent staff Ethiopian Universities by 2025.

Staff Profile

  • Six males and One female(messenger, Diploma)
  • Four of them are Assistant Professors, one MSc, and one assistant professor and PhD candidate

 

Current activities employed under staff capacity building directorate

The objective of staff capacity building coordination is organizing the fragmented and disorganized training in the university.

This objective is achieved by:

  • Giving orientation for newly recruited employees.
  • Giving induction training for newly recruited teachers.
  • Undertaking continuous and well-organized staff skill and knowledge gap identification.
  • Analyzing and organizing skill and knowledge gaps of staff for the development of training and experience sharing proposals.
  • Calling and receiving training and experience sharing proposals for evaluations and approvals.
  • Facilitating and coordinating training and experience sharing events based on the approved proposals.
  • Certifying trainers on the successful completion of trainings as per relevant guidelines.
  • Collecting and analyzing the training and experience sharing feedbacks to evaluate impact on skill and knowledge enhancements.
  • Co-operating with other relevant offices in the organization of seminars and conferences.
  • Creating link with other domestic and foreign academic institutions and training centers to work together on staff capacity building program.
  • Developing Information Technology Platform for the successful continuous gap identifications, coordination and monitoring of staff capacity building program and creation of updated staff talent pool.

Higher Diploma Program (HDP)

The objective of HDP program is to improve the quality of education in Ethiopia through licensing teachers in skills and professionalism.

This objective is achieved by:

  • Requesting need assessment from all faculties
  • Listing the needy teachers
  • Coordinating from material preparation to graduation and certification
  • Identifying their own needs to develop a more reflective practice demonstrating high standards of professional ethics
  • Developing teaching as a skill, based on experience and sound theoretical knowledge
  • Role modeling good practice and contribute to institutional and community development
  • Providing high quality learning experiences for teachers and students
  • Involving in action research, collaborative learning sand team work
  • Addressing gender issues and social inclusion

English Language Improvement Center Coordination (ELIC)

The objective of this program (ELIC) is to have competent, self-reliant, innovative and committed teachers and students at all levels of education; across Ethiopia (ELIC)

This objective is achieved by:

  1. Initiating an awareness-raising program, including an orientation workshop/seminar.
  2. Establishing Clubs: Debating/Discussion Groups, Drama Club, Film Club, Free Talk etc.
  • English Language Magazine/Posters (including quizzes, jokes, cartoons, puzzles,
    letters, articles, advertisements for events etc) in order to develop students’ reading skills,
  • Female-only Conversation Clubs
  1. Special events: English Festival, e.g. debate, public speech, jokes, plays, films, inviting guest speakers in order to develop students listening and speaking skills.
  2. Trainings:
  • For first year students
  • For new teachers
  • For secretaries
  • For graduates etc.
  1. Local School Links: ELT methodology training for school teachers, helping schools to develop ELIC centers, Conversation/discussion clubs for school staff.
  2. Resource Development: Audio library (cassettes/CDs), Audio- visual library (films/documentaries), Reference materials;
  • Reading materials-books, magazines, newspapers, laminated reading texts with
    questions;
  • Materials like a TV, a DVD player, CD player, a photocopier, cassette tape recorder/player, a fast copier for cassettes and/or CDs, a laminator, a satellite dish, computers, shelves, movable desks and chairs.
