About the Department
The Department of Public Health is the leading department within the College of Health Sciences at Mattu University, distinguished by the breadth of its academic fields and the number of faculty members it employs. It has undergone significant development and reform to reach its current status, providing high-quality education and services to the community. As our university slogan states, we are dedicated to serving the community. Our department is committed to collaborating with students, local residents, and various stakeholders to make a meaningful impact. In addition to our educational efforts, the university actively contributes to the local community through health awareness programs, free community service, and workshops aimed at promoting public health initiatives. By fostering these partnerships, we aim to enhance the well-being of our community and empower individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to lead healthier lives
Since 2012, the department has offered undergraduate programs in public health through regular, evening, and summer sessions. While the non-regular undergraduate programs have since been discontinued, in 2016, a Master of Public Health program was launched with weekend classes in Gambella, Mattu, and Bedele. Currently, the Master of Public Health is available as a weekend program at Bedele, Bure, and Mattu. Additionally, since 2019, the department has been teaching Human Nutrition through both regular and weekend programs. While the regular program has been discontinued. It has also been offering a regular post-basic family health program since late 2020.From 2005 up to 2017 Around 760+ in BSc, Masters, Night, weekend and post basic program are graduated from this department.
At present, the department serves a total 126 of Bachelor of Science students and 64 Master's students. There are 26 faculty members in total: 22 are actively teaching while 4 are pursuing further education (study leave). Among these active faculty members,
3 have earned a PhD, and
16 serve as lecturers.

Dear Students,
I am delighted to welcome you to the Public Health program, designed for professionals in clinical, Research, community health, and policy-related fields, as well as those passionate about improving population health. The rapid advancements in public health practices and health management have driven the need for skilled professionals in public health to support the country’s health transformation agenda. This field is reshaping healthcare delivery today and will continue to do so in the future.
We are in an era where data-driven decision-making, epidemiology, and health promotion strategies are revolutionizing public health systems. Breakthroughs in health communication, behavioral science, and community engagement are driving innovations in preventive care, health education, and public health initiatives. Since our establishment in 2005, we have been committed to excellence in education, Community service and research. We offer different programs including Regular BSc in Public Health, and Post-Basic program and Masters in General MPH and MSc. in Human Nutrition in Regular and Weekend Program.
In addition to teaching, we actively conduct research projects in different field of Specialization like Epidemiology, Nutrition, Health Policy Analysis, Community Health Interventions, Behavioral Health, and Global Health Solutions.
