Under the theme "Joint Effort for Greater Change," the event featured comprehensive discussions on the university’s 2024/25 achievements, the 2025/26 annual plan, and its five-year strategic framework. President Alemu Desasa, PhD, highlighted notable accomplishments such as the revitalization of agricultural research centers, resolution of longstanding border issues affecting two dormant campuses, the launch of eight agricultural projects, community service initiatives grounded in practical application, and the completion of key infrastructure developments. He attributed these successes to the dedication, discipline, and collaborative spirit of the university’s staff.
Dr. Alemu emphasized that while the university benefits from rich natural and human resources, much work remains. He called for intensified cooperation across academic, research, and community service sectors, stressing that such synergy is essential for the university’s advancement from a historic institution to a history-maker. He urged the staff to maintain their commitment and unity, fostering loyalty both to their work and to each other.
The celebration included an awards ceremony honoring directors, executive staff, deans, team leaders, and department heads who demonstrated exemplary performance throughout the fiscal year. Recipients received merit certificates and cash prizes ranging from 8,000 to 15,000 Birr, based on their roles and achievements, as evaluated by the university’s administration council.
Special recognition was also given to staff members whose contributions exceeded expectations and significantly supported the success of the university’s 2024/2025 fiscal year plan, reinforcing a culture of ownership and dedication. In his closing remarks, President Alemu expressed sincere gratitude for the efforts of all employees and pledged to enhance rewards and recognition in the upcoming year.
The event was supported by notable sponsors, whose contributions were formally acknowledged. The celebration underscored the university’s ongoing commitment to serving the community and fostering excellence among its workforce.

During the session, Dr. Bedilu Teka, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service at Mattu University, outlined the key strategies that have contributed to the success of the university in these areas.
Speaking on behalf of the Raya University team, Dr. Abraha Mesele, Director of Academic Affairs, commended Mattu University for its well-equipped teaching and learning facilities, including modern laboratories, workshops, and field demonstration sites. He emphasized that these resources significantly enhance the quality of education and praised Mattu University as an exemplary institution. Dr. Abraha expressed confidence that Raya University will effectively apply the insights gained to improve its own academic practices.
The visiting team also expressed appreciation for the dedication of Mattu University’s staff and the strong leadership that facilitated the exchange. Mr. Sabit Zenu, Head of the President’s Office at Mattu University, highlighted the staff’s ongoing commitment to driving positive change.

Mattu University and Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (ESSGI) Explore Institutional Collaboration
Mattu University and the Ethiopia Space Science and Geospatial Institute (ESSGI) recently held high-level discussions aimed at forging a strategic partnership to enhance research, education, and innovation in space science and geospatial technologies, particularly in GIS and Remote Sensing. The meeting emphasized mutual interests in leveraging scientific collaboration to support sustainable development efforts in Ethiopia. Key areas of discussion includes joint research and innovation projects focused on the application of geospatial technology in natural resource monitoring and assessment, forest management, climate resilience, and , Land use Planning, and Precision Agriculture. The partnership also aims to promote collaborative studies in disaster risk reduction and natural resource management using geospatial and space-based technologies.
Academic and capacity-building initiatives formed another major pillar of the discussions, with plans for faculty exchanges, internships, externships, and specialized training programs. Both institutions expressed a commitment to developing academic programs and short-term courses in space science and geospatial disciplines. The partnership will further focus on technology transfer and infrastructure development. This includes sharing geospatial data, tools, and best practices, as well as utilizing ESSGI’s satellite capabilities such as the Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite for academic and research purposes.
Mr. Kedir Harfo, the representative of ESSGI, emphasized that the collaboration aligns with Ethiopia’s national development priorities and space program. He noted that working with Mattu University would significantly contribute to strengthening scientific capacity and achieving technological self-reliance in key sectors.
Dr. Diriba Gemechu, Academic Directorate Director at Mattu University, highlighted how this collaboration would enhance the university’s academic quality, increase research output, and create more opportunities for students through joint programs and externships.
Mr. Zenebe Reta Roba, Dean, College of Natural Resource and Agricultural Economics at Mattu University, presented several potential research initiatives that could be implemented through the partnership. These include studies on landslide hazard zonation and susceptibility mapping using geospatial techniques, evaluation of land capability and classification for sustainable land use planning, forest cover change and carbon stock assessments, and the integration of smart land-use planning through geospatial technology and etc .
The collaboration is fully aligned with Ethiopia’s Space Policy and Digital Transformation Strategy, both of which prioritize the use of geospatial technologies to support the country’s long-term sustainable growth. By leveraging Mattu University’s strong academic foundation and ESSGI’s advanced technical capabilities, the collaboration is poised to elevate Ethiopia’s standing as a hub for space science and geospatial innovation in the region. The institutions plan to formalize and finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will outline specific collaborative projects, funding mechanisms, and implementation frameworks.
